Should I Crate Train My Bulldog?

Although not all bulldogs actually need to be crate trained, proper crate training can have many benefits for any bulldog or owner.

Originating in Germany, the name Affenpinscher means, "monkey-like terrier". However, in France the breed is described as the "Diablotin Moustachu" or "moustached little devil". Both describe the appearance and attitude of this delightful breed.

Many bulldogs have severe separation anxiety because bulldogs are pack animals. As a result, when humans leave a bulldog home alone, sometimes the bulldog will chew or destroy furniture and other objects. Crating a bulldog for a few hours when it is home alone will help to reduce anxiety-related destruction.

West highland white terriers began their history as the undesirable white offspring of the dark-colored cairn terrier. With the dog's popularity today, it is hard to believe that the early westies were usually drowned or shot.

Another benefite of crate trianing is that wild bulldogs live in dens. These dens provide protection from the weather, comfort and security. Crate training, when done properly, can give a domestic bulldog the same sense of security.

Chow chows were originally bred as food, just like cows. However, in some cases, they were also used as hunters and helpers. They were also used to keep people warm under cold conditions by cuddling up to people with their soft, warm fur.

Another good use for crate training is transportation. If your bulldog is trained to go into its crate on command then it can be taken on a trip or to the vet with ease.

The Bloodhound doesn't need to smell blood to find someone who is lost. It is said that his name instead means blooded hound, or aristocratic. They actually track people because people leave a trail of skin cells with their own unique odor wherever they go.

When you first begin crate training a bulldog, it's important not to lock the bulldog in the crate or use the crate as a punishment in any way. The object is to get the bulldog to want to go into his crate when he needs to. It should feel comforting, like a human's bedroom. If you are going to be home with your bulldog the crate should be left open so that the bulldog has free access to his crate. This will allow him to get used to the crate. Over time he will actually enjoy spending time in his crate, even when he doesn't have to.

German Shepherds have incredibly sensitive noses. They have over 225 million cell receptors in their noses, making them ideal for police work, such as bomb and drug sniffing, finding missing children and tracking criminals.

The only situation where crate training should not be used is if nobody is going to be available to let the bulldog out of the crate for a certain amount of time. Bulldogs like to keep their beds clean, so they do not like to go to the bathroom anywhere near their beds. A smaller puppy generally has to go every two or three hours. An older bulldog can generally wait for up to five or six hours. Therefore, a crate should never be used for long-term confinement.
